Christiana sat up straight in bed, shaking like a leaf. She let out a low whimper, and huddled into the corner, as far from Roland as she could get.

Roland spotted her and sat up, pulling her back into his arms. “What happened, love?”

“He killed.” She knew she made no sense, but she hoped he'd understand her.

“The man sent here? He killed?”

Christiana nodded. “He used his powers to kill.”

“What are his powers?”

Christiana shook her head, her eyes wild with fear. “I couldn’t tell. I could feel his thoughts. He was elated that he’d been able to kill with his powers. It had given him a thrill to kill something. I don’t think he killed a person, but he killed something and gloried in it. Anyone who can take that much joy in killing is…frightening.” She shuddered, not wanting to think about it further.

Roland settled her head on his shoulder, stroking her hair. “I’m sorry you felt it happen.” He kept stroking her and speaking to her softly. “It will all be fine.”

“I hope so. I really do. The first man…Alfred. He was evil, but he didn’t glory in killing. He did what he had to do for his master. This man? He wants to cause pain and death. He feels more alive when he kills.” She shuddered. “He’s truly evil, with everything inside him.”

“He won’t reach you or your sisters. We won’t let him.”

Christiana knew he meant well, but he was wrong. “You can’t stop him.”
